V. E. S. THROTILES APPOMATTOX IN OPENER BY 52-48 SCORE
The Bishops unveiled the 1956-57 basketball season with an air of un- certainty against Appomattox. With most of last year's powerhouse gone, the team was filled with newcomers.
Led by Frank Craighill and George Ross, the team proceeded to put a win under its belt by defeating Ap- pomattox on their own court 52-48. The game was close and hard fought all the way with the final analysis coming from the foul line. The Ap- pomattox cagers hit only I0-23 foul shots, which proved to be the dif- ference.
V. E. S. led most of the way, but not by more than two or three points. At the half, it was 23-21 in favor of V. E. S. The second half found V. E. S. unable to open up a lead and the score was 48-48 with only a minute left. But Captain Craighill made like Marques Haynes for the last seconds to ease up the clock and then pushed in the final goal. Ross was high scor- er for V. E. S. with 20 points.
