STATE MEET
The V.E.S. track team put forth it~ strongest effort in recent years to w1_n fourth place in the Virginia P n v a t e School Track A ssociation Meet at Charlottesville on May 16. This was the last meet for coaches Dale Gramley and Frank Aldred, both of whom are returning to school next year to do graduate work.
The first notable performance for the Bishops was turned in by Lawson Turner who won his qualifying heat in ~he high hurdles in a new school record of 15.2. In the mile run Jim Hotelling was the winner while Lin- wood Bolles ran a surprise second after being spiked at the beginning o f t h e final 4 4 0 . T urner placed second in the high hurdle finals, being edged out by Doug Griffith of RMA
whom he had beaten in the trials. George Harris fought off Jud Browning of Woodberry Forest to bring back the half-mile crown for the third year in a row. Last year Doug Forsyth won the event in I'59.2 to set the state prep record while the year before the victory belonged to Paul
Bloom. Turner finished out a fine day by winning the low hurdles in 20.6, a new school record, while Pratt Mounfield, Wes Morek, Frank Booker, and Harris combined to bring back fifth place in the mile relay, running it in 3:36.2, only two tenths of a second off the school record.
Ending a fine day of V.E.S. per- formances was the 12-9 pole vault by Arch Hicks. The Bishop cindermen thus compiled more points (3I) than ever before in the prep championship and defeated Hargrave Military Academy, the only team to defeat V.E.S. in dual competition.
