Editor's Note: The following re- t£•rt 011 the "Sheeps," an underground rgm1i.:ation of a small burg called Rock~' Mount located in an obscure cornrr of North Carolina. This article i.; of special importance to the school as a whole now, because it threatens 'h< 1·crv existence of Raleigh, Bluc- fidd, a11d Morganton as dominant
factors in V.E.S. LIFE.
Despite "Bullet" Bob's recent criti-
c'sm of Rocky Mount, it still possesses ~~ least one invaluable asset which o other North Carolina town can boast of having. This asset is neither 1he long-remembered June German dance nor the fact that Rocky Mount was for many years the home of the g•eot band leader Kay Kyser nor even that its senior high school holds the ftle of being 4-H State Champs for four consecutive times. Rather, this 's one that is today held in the highest e;teem by the community because of l numerous unselfish services rend- e·ed for the betterment of the society. This asset 1s the Sheeps'
Place.
Located deep in the heart of West Haven, Rocky Mount's exclusive •esidential area, is the Sheeps' Place, a well known landmark for fun-seek-
ng teenagers from all over Eastern "Jorth Carolina. It is a small, one •oom house that was built about the year 1930. A decade ago the house •as condemned by the k>cal building 1spedor, and until ilbout a year and a half ago when a group of Rocky Mount teenagers completely re- ~ovoted it, it was uninhabited. As •he metamorphosis occurred, visible s'gns of improvement could be seen, nthe form of new windows, doors, and a new paint job, both inside and cut. After these improvements had
been completed, the Sheeps installed an elaborate music system and con- s'ructed a small, raised stage at one end of the house. This was soon fol- owed by the building of a bar, where only the softest of beverages are ;erved.
The Sheeps, also called Shepherds, Me best known for their gala parties at the clubhouse. Rarely are fewer than a hundred people packed be- tween the walls of the Sheeps' on
any party night (actually I000 people - I 00 at a time!) One of their most recent parties, held on New Year's Eve, was witnessed by lovable Carlyle "Slop-Bop" White and A. E. New- man (Robert Harriss), along with well in excess of a hundred foot-stomp- in', hand-clappin', horn-blowin', and otherwise happy teenagers on hand to welcome in the New Year. Music was furnished by records from the club's extensive record library, one that far surpasses that of many broadcasting stations. A t the inter- mission, entertainment was presented by the fabulous "Tikis," a trio of talented local folk singers. However, the latest festive event at the Sheeps' Place was held only several weeks ago and proved to be the very ultimate in every imaginable way. For it was on this occasion that the teenagers of Rocky Mount and many from the rest of Eastern North Carolina had the chance to hear England's famous "Beatles" at a one-night performance and their only one in North Carolina to date. The following is a brief clip- ping taken from an international wire service concerning their appearance in Rocky Mount:
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (UPI)- Thousands jammed the sides of streets today in Rocky Mount's most elite residential area- West Haven to get a close look at England's well known Beatles. The singers' motorcade had as its destination the worldly Sheeps' Place, home of the Black Sheeps' Club for boys. They will be mak- ing a one-night performance here.
The four V.E.S. SHEEP$, Jep Rose, Frank Harrison, Julian Fenner, and Marshall Henry, wish to announce
that during the Spring Holiday, at a date which will be made known as soon as possible, there will be another gala party at the ever-levin', ever- popular, ever-swi ng in ', Sheeps' Place. Musi c will be furnished by V.E.S.'s own Richard Cowper and his Kin- ston "Upsetters," and all Bishops are invited to make the scene (and bring along enough money to help defray the cost of this article.)
