CROSS COUNTRY
During the half times of the foot- ball games, the limelight must turn to the cross country team. This group of hardworking boys is the winningest team on campus.
Twenty-three cross country can- didates reported for opening day workouts on September I I with hopes of equaling last year's 8-1 mark. Until after the first meet, drills will be held twice daily with the usual afternoon
Co-Captains Ham Myers and Bobby Watts with Coach Lee.
Coach Finlay has high hopes for a successful season, but realizes that the shoes of the popular and capable
Frank Aldred will be hard to fill. The schedule is approximately the same as last year's with HMA, the only blemish on the V. E. S. record, being the main obstacle. Coach Finlay feels that with determination and hard work the team will have a respectable record. Jim Hotelling has already re- flected his hard work as he handily won the second annual stumble derby on September 20 in an unofficial course record time of II:17-in the rain.

Prospects meet- ing Coach Finlay were veterans Jim Hotelling, Mike Agelasto, a n d George Harris, backed up by under- classmen Jim Williams, Peter Young, Logon Forsyth, Jim Beckwith, Rick Jones, Bob Hodgman, Ervin Meluleni, Bill Foster, Jack Pearson and Harry Logan. Linwood Bolles, second place winner (behind Hotelling) in the mile at the '63 state meet, joined the squad a week later and is being counted on heavily to help counteract graduation losses.
In addition to this group, the Bishops will fill a Jayvee team com- posed of younger boys. However, it is very probable that some of them will see varsity action. Those cur- rently on t he J ayvee roster include Dyke Messinger, John Rife, Joe Link- er, Steve Reams, Charley Bridgers, Clarke Fountain, Joe Mathias, and Brodie Winborne.
