The 1977 Varsity Cross Country team has gotten off to a running start with victories over
Ravenscroft, R.M.A., and Hargrave. The lone setback was against an impressive E.C. Glass
team.
The team is led by seven
returning lettermen and several promising newcomers. Co- captains T om Brockman and Parks Snead, who have nine years of varsity experience between them, have again established themselves as top
scorers. Frank Elder and Jim Evans, both consistent runners, have worked very hard last year as well as early this season, and are currently running first and second man respectively. Other impressive runners who have placed high in past meets
include Jeff Evans, Sandy Trent, Kipp Small, Eric Boyer, Doug Dickey, and Bruce Thomasson.

When reached for comment,
Mr. Pettyjohn said "This is a
learning by doing experience,
and is designed to develop one's
outdoor skills." He also said that the full potential of the program
improved, as new repelling and backpacking equipment have been acquired.

Experience is expected to be provided by returning lettermen Tommy Stoughton and Edwin Penick, who are unsurpassed at such skills as rope throwing and wall climbing. However, the team's best runner for the second

This year's Crusader team will be one of new talent. Seventy percent of the team are new players, and there are many outstanding individuals. Lenny Brugh, the fastest, looks to be a promising player. On the line
there is Bill Overman, another player who is working hard.
Head coach Mr. Culbertson and assistant coach Mr. Gregory are working on basics and organization, two of the most important skills needed before continuing to more advanced objectives.

The team's strong point will be their passing game. They are looking for a good offensive team.
Mr. Gregory wants to teach the team that they can work hard and
still have a good time. •••
