for most of the runners, as daily runs are sometimes in excess of twelve miles. The harriers hope to get back to the winning way when they face Fork Union Military Academy on Parents Weekend, Sat., Oct. 22. F.U.M.A.
has already beaten the Bishops once this year by a score of 19-37, but that was an away meet when several of our top runners were out of action.

The Deacon football team has started their season off with four very impressive wins over the Hargrave JV's, Belfield JV's,
should win the remainder of their games and be the only undefeated team in the school.
The Deacons have been led on offense by quarterback John Lee. Doug Reid has led the rushing
with Steve Templeton, Chris Acree, Bill Pearson and Kenneth Templeton. On defense, Horace Beasley and Tom Wilkinson
have done outstanding jobs. The Deacons have three more games including Hargrave, Woodberry Black and they finish up the season with a game here against Blue Ridge.

team. Injuries to Parks Snead and Sandy Trent have sidelined them for several of the last meets, but they hope to recover for the Prep League championship on October 29. Previous meets do not count when the Prep League standings for the season are
established. Everything is based upon this single meet.
The season has been difficult

season are approaching. After the meet with F.U.M.A., the VES runners face the top three teams of last year: Episcopal, St. Christophers and Blue Ridge.

The Junior Varsity Cross- Country team has had three meets so far this season and has one victory and two defeats. Their only win came against E. C. Glass on September 28 with a score of 26-31. In that meet, now
varsity runners, Randy Meador and senior Bill Burns finished second and fourth respectively, with J.V.'s John Vandersydeand Mike Wherley finishing fifth and
sixth respectively.
Bill Burns has overcome
mononucleosis from the summer to become a very consistent runner. However, he is currently plagued with an injury that he
received in practice last week. Randy Meador's improvement has been remarkable, and he is currently running in the top eight on the varsity squad.
The two losses came to Fork Union by a score of 24-31 and Woodberry Forest by a score of
15-50.
The J.V. cross country team
has five meets left on their schedule and Coach Hackett feels very optimistic about the

future. He said, "I eventually hope to have a well molded team, but being as I'm new, I have a lot
to learn."
