The V.E.S. Bishops started their season with an eye-opener victory over Trinity with a score
of 70 to 69.-The game continued into six overtimes until Jaimie Sligh scored with 20 seconds left. Trinity shot with 4 seconds re- maining but was unable to score.
Tryg Brody lead the team with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Other valuable players were John Lit- tle with 16 points and 10 re-
bounds. Cecil Gill with 12 points and 1 rebound, and also Tripp
Binker with 10 points and 2 re- bounds.
After the game I talked to
Later I interviewed Coach Leake and asked him about a possible championship team. He said, "I feel that way because the big guys are play:ng tremen- dous: Brody, Bunker, Little. We
put in a new offense which favors
the 'big guys' so if our guards get turned on we will kill somebody If we don't make mistakes the
other teams will have to beat us. I commented on Blue Ridge and what affect they will have on
us for a Prep League Champion- ship. He confidently said, "After that game we will see our st~n ding in the league.Whoever wms will be the favorite for the championship game."
Also, I mentioned the effect of a crowd on the attitudes of the players. Coach Leake confiden_t- ly said, "Crowd support 1s definite help to our team. We get
more lift with fans."
As a closing note I would like to say that for our winter
athletics programs to be success- ful each one of you need to sup- port our teams. For each one of you that helps in supporting athletics you increase our chance of victory and also make the sport more enjoyable for each and every person.

Coach Leake about the per-

The strongest point of this 1 years Deacon basketball team is their forwards. David Hunter and Steve Tulloh, both very
strong players lead this young team. Coach Ross has very high hopes for players Steve Tulloh, David Hunter, Kevin Batton and Billy Nease.
The Decons first game is Tues- day, November lOth against Ap- pomattox. When coach Ross was asked his expectations of this
first game and the rest of the sea- son his reply was: "I knew I had the best bunch of players last year. 'l"his year we are young and in xperienced. My expectations are not as high this year, but I'm
There is a group of young players on the team who have been given a particular name
called the "smurfs." Who and what are the "smurfs"? The "smurfs" are the scrappy and smaller players on the Deacon
basketball team.
· "l'hey got the name from last
years J.V . baseball team. Everyone we played were bigger than we were. Now all these guys _ are on my basketball team and the name just carried over," says Coach Ross.
Who are the smurfs?
"The smurfs are Walker Pet- tyjohn, Bruce Rhodes, Michael and Chet McPhatter, Ted Brown and Chris Mawry," Coach Ross
says.
Coach Ross has high hopes for this young Deacon basketball team. They are expected to do
. well this year, but they can only do this with your support.
