APRIL~.
By Jared Dawson
As we enter the Spring term, with coeducation right around
the corner, many of us are
wondering what it is the admis- sions office has done to prepare. the arrival of girls at V.E.S. Fur-
thermore, where do we present- ly stand as far as women ap-
plicants to V.E.S.?
In answer io these questions
one must first realize the enor- mous task the admissions office has bad. Their work began as
soon as the coeducation an- nouncement was made last
winter. A coed steering comittee was devised with the general purpose of getting ready for girls
next year. Their discussions, oc- curing once a week, deal mainly with the physical and social
aspects of running a coed school. The committee is headed by Mr. Douglas, and its members are Mr. Brown, Mrs. Hackett, Mrs. Hopkins, Mrs. Foster, Mr.
Spencer and Mrs. Ward, whose son Pope graduated last year.
All throughout the year the admissions staff, as well as the committee members have been busy attending seminars, and visiting other coed and girls'
schools. Another aspect of the coed preparation process is the development of a faculty orienta- tion program. With various guest speakers, such as Mrs. Ketcham, an educational consul-
tant from Baltimore, the faculty will learn what it takes for a smooth transition to coeduca- tion. In addition, the.orientation
program is set up to discuss' other needs for the girls besides
the obvious physical changes on · campus.
In speaking with Mrs. Foster, she explained that Wyatt will be .
refurbished this summer. Cur- rently, plans are in effect to upgrade the·electrical output to
allow for hairdryers and other "girl stuff." Also, a bathtub will · be installed in the bathroom on. e.ach floor, and the basement of Wyatt will be converted into an
area for washers and dryers. Another responsibility of the steering committee is to look in- to general security, and rules and regulations for the girls next
year. Interestingly enough, the committee has spent long hours reviewing dozens of handbooks

were many inquiries from girla Also, Mr. Spencer and Mrl. Foster have already had three coed visitation weekends thia year. According to Mrs. Foater, the response and feedback hu been great. She reports thatallil going well. While only 10 girls have been accepted to date, many more applications are be- ing processed. As V .E.S. operates on a rolling admissions
policy, Mrs. Foster is sure that the 33 places for girls will be fill. ed by this summer. By the begin- ning of April, the admissions staff will be notified of the 10 girls' decisions. In the meantime, the admissions office and coed steering committee continue to work hard and do a we~) respected job in selecting the
first girls to arrive to V.E.S.

'Mac' and Boys Hit England
By Cliff Shroeder
During Spring Break, Bruce McCormick and Mike Lake chaperoned a group of V.E.S.
students on a trip to Great Bri- tain. The group included Tom Berry, John Flippin, Jassen Bury, Jason Drumheller, Johnston Cox, Thomas McMeekin, Inman Hendricks, Bruce Mullen, Colby Howard and Jeremy Arey. The group spent eight days traveling around Britain with a group of girls from Seven Hills School. The group spent three nights in London, halC-a-day in both Strat- ford and Oxford, one night in Bir- mingham, two night11 in Edin-
burgh and one night in York. Leaving on the March 8 from
Washington, the group landed at Hearthrow Airport in London. The student• toured all of the hi toriral site• in London, auch
Camden town, Mr. McCormick refused to give a street person spare change and therefore had a
"curse" placed on him because he was supposedly the only ..yankee.. ever to refuse money
to that bum.
Continuing on their tour,
mostly by bus, the group viewed the play "The Three Penny Opera" and visited Oxford University and Christ Church
College. While in Stratford, the group was able to see Shakespeare's birthplace and where he was buried in Holy
Trinity Church.
The group's night life included
visiting different pubs as well as a special visit to the famous Hard Roek Cafe. The group also sampl- ed hagis while in Scotland - hagia is a sausage dish made of all the entrial11 of a sheep. Ironically, the group found it quite tasty.
