Suby's Visit••• and the futu•·e

J ohn Suby's visit to VES had a positive effect on the school com- munity. His personal experiences conveyed the seriousness of drug and alcohol abuse in our daily lives. His moderate approach to the prG- blem was a relief from the general preaching done on the subject in t he past. Suby, with his sincere tone, showed the students he was con-
cerned with their problems and wanted to help. His most compelling
comments concerned his personal experiences with LSD - the drug · that ruined his social life and his relationships with his family and friends. After his talk, many students wanted to meet with him per- sonally, proving the effectiveness of his visit and the concern the
students have for the problem.
Where do we go from here? Alcohol and drug abuse continues to
threaten young Americans every day - VES is no exception. We support the Headmaster's decision to form a committee to study the problem and further suggest the following:
• VES should hire a professional counselor to assist students with various personal and health problems, including drug and alcohol
abuse.
• Students should be given a voice in the selection of the
counselor, because the students have to have total trust in the per- son.
• Students can choose to seek counseling on their own without fear of disciplinary action.
• The counselor should be outgoing, upbeat, trust worthy and able to put students totally at ease.
The students may be hesitant to use this system at first, but given time to develop, it will ultimately greatly benefit the school communi-
