Managua; the capital. The most common message is, "Seguimos de frente," or in English, "W e're with the front!" - "The front" being the Sandinista National Liberation Front.
The people of each country treated us with friendship and we felt no anti-American Senti- ment. In Costa Rica, people would go out of their way to be
friendly. On our 3rd night in San Jose' we met a native guitar player on the street. He showed us all around the city and pointed out the places to stay away from. In Nicaragua things were no dif· ferent. People were outgoing and friendly. One evening we sat in a pub with several veteran Sandinistas who had lost the use of their legs fighting the Con· tras.
Upon leaving the region and retur ning to Miami we were all excited to be back in the United States but sorry to leave Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The people in Costa Rica say the$' lead, "Ia
pura vida," or "the pure life," - We feel the same way and look
forward to retur ning someday.

During spring break Malcom
Douglas, Lance Stewart and Mike Cozzens traveled to Cen- tral American to vacation and
learn more about the political situation and the peoples of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
The political situation in each country were drastically dif- ferent. Costa Rica, which has been a democracy since it was
founded in 1821, just has its elec- tions. To show which party one supports, a flag is hung outside one's house. Everywhere we saw
either blue and red or green and white flags. Even though the elections were held in October
and the 'green & white' party
won, the flags were still flying;
Even the losing party's flags are
still up. Everyone seems to be
politically involved in the elec- tions.
Nicaragua, however, is under the rule of the Sandinistas. Once rebels lighting to overthrow the
oppresive dictator, Somoza, the Sandinistas are now engaged in a war against the U.S. backed Con-

main reason why the house is be- ing built is to get more faculty livingoncampus.Sincethreeoff· campus faculty members are
leaving, three new faculty families will be here on campus to benefit the students.
V.E.S. is borrowing money for these projects and paying for them on their own, not from
fundraising efforts. The COD· struction wil be done by Creu- RIIodes & the same people who are building the om addition. In the futUJ"e we

By D.J. Patriek Besides the addition to the
gym, there are many other new
building plans at V.E.S. There · will soon be construction of a new
athletic field and a faculty hous- ing duplex.
The new field will be located across from the JV soccer and lacrosse fields. It is 70 X 110 yards in dimension and will have bermuda grass. A new irrigation
system will be installed and a seperate water line will also be put down to benefit the other fields in that area.
V.E.S. wants to aid both boys and girls with their field and also have something the community can appreciate. The new field will be used for lacroase, soccer,
and field hockey gamea only. The new faculty house will be a duplex like the Bloors' and
Quanta' house. It will be located
