Although it looks like the Deacon basketball team has gotten off to a slow start with their 1-5 record, every game bas been a close one. It has been more gfbad luck than anything else. That caused the unfor- tunate losses. The ''SMURFS" are small, quick, and enth- usiastic whether they are win- ning or losing. Their record is1- 1 in the Pre League with a win over Blue Ridge and the loss coming to St. Christopher's.
Coach Ross eaid, "The goals at
the beginning af the season
were to have fun, learn bas- ketball and be competitive in
the Prep League tournament. Every game is practice until February 21, when the tour-
nament is played here at VES."

whole team he commented, "The Smurfs are a lot of fun."
T Glenn has been a tremendous
help to the team after missing the first three games due to an injury. Other strong members of the squad are Bruce "Bom- ber" Rhodes with his set shot and the "Twin Towers" (the only height in the starting line
up) Jeremy Arey and Clark Boykin. Assistant Coach George Phlllips is another pos- itive point for the "Smurfs," as he pumps the team up with hls
