Issue 1, 1993
by Jason Benjamin Arbusto
As you may know, the
school has plans to build a new athletic complex which is one of four 75th Anniversary Campaign objectives. The other objectives are to build a new Science and Activity Center (completed in March 1992), to increase the endow- ment by $750,000 (accom- plished), and to raise $100,000 toward the Annual Giving Program over three years (accomplished). The new ath- letic complex, which will include a fieldhouse, a tennis center, and gardens, will cost $3,000,000. Over $2,000,000 has already been raised. The new fieldhouse will be an addition to the already exist- ing structure which includes King fieldhouse, Barksdale gymnasium, and the women's addition, added when VES coeducated. The tennis cen-
ter, which will have eight courts with California cor- ners, will be located on the other side of Williams Road, next to the old cemetery.
The new fieldhouse will have many nice features. There will be an indoor track, a center court and two multi- purpose courts for basketball, volleyball and other sports, three score boards, a batting cage, team rooms, racquetball courts, locker rooms, an exer- cise and weight room, and a grandstand.
The new fieldhouse will be of supreme quality. The VES faculty and trustees refuse to make any compromises in the quality of the new fieldhouse. According to Athletic Director Steve Culbertson, ''The new fieldhouse is going to put us in the same league facility- wise with our competitors. It is a functional, first quality

Mr. Burlington not only enjoys working with the stu- dents in the Glee Club but also on the athletic field and on dorm. He is assistant JV soccer coach, a job he has really enjoyed

New Faces Robert Burlington
by Hunter Morrison
This year VES has seen many new faces. These have not only been faces of new students, but also faces of new faculty members.
One of the "new guys" is Robert Burlington, known to students as Coach Burlington or just plainly Mr. Burlington. He was raised in New Jersey and went to Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. His family has recently moved to Rhode Island, so now when he speaks of going home he is referring to Rhode Island and not New Jersey.
He has come to VES as the teacher of music and director of the VES Glee Club. He is really enjoying teaching at the school and working with the students in the Glee Club on programs for the school com-
gymn<~sium/King Fieldhouse and philosophically with the well-rounded experience that attracts students to our pro- gram. Best of all, it's going to
give us a place to rally, to host tournaments, and to really showcase the spirit of our community."
and feels that it has been a very good experience. Mr. Burlington lives on third Jett and is one of four dorm masters living on that dorm. If you do not know or have not met this new face on campus, you should go and meet Mr. Burlington.
Janet GraHen
by Andrew Green
Maybe you have already met the new woman with the smiling face who sits in the receptionist's office, answer- ing phones, directing visitors around campus, and sending out mailings.
For those of you who haven't, her name is Janet Gratten and she joined the VES community on Novem- ber 1 of this year.
Mrs. Gratten says she loves the "friendly environment"
