Sports VARSITY FOOTBALL
by Logan Lane
The Varsity football team
has had an enthusiastic sea- son. The team this year has had a lot of new players and under the coaching of Mr. Moore they have done very well.
It was a tough season, but we managed to pull out with one win and six losses. The players that were responsible for the 12 touchdowns scored during the season were Meredith Freeman with 10,

Andy Ward with 1, and Greg Owens with 1.
There were 6 senior players this year, three of whom were the captains: Andy Ward, John Leadingham, and Aldan Yelverton. The other three seniors are Sam Crittenden, Terry Herschner, and Thome Harvin.
Everyone of the guys has done a great job! Congratu- lations to the team and the coaches on a productive VES Football season!!!
SOCCER
by Logan Lane
Soccer is a different kind of
game than many others. It is called a "player's game" because the players call the shots and act as their own coaches when they are play- ing on the field. The VES var- sity soccer team has done a great job of "calling the shots" this season. They have a sea- son record of 5 wins, 7 losses, and 2 ties.
Bernard Reams and Drew Landis were the captains of the team. They had "a good nucle- us of players coming back," said Coach Culbertson. They also had three very outstand- ing new players who all made great contributions to the team: Hudson Martin, a lOth grader, Todd Ravin, an 11th grader who started in all of the games he played, and Matt Lafone who is also a lOth grader.
There are four returning players that are seniors: Joey
England, Aaron Currier, and both of the captains. Jonathan Fuller, Pouch Hy, and Nick Gaffos are the new senior players this year.
Mr. Culbertson felt that if there had not been so many injuries, then the season might have gone a little more smoothly. He commented that the team "never really got a chance to play as a unit" because of all of the injuries which occured at different points in the season.
Although some of the sea- son might not have been exactly as they had hoped for, the soccer team did tie with Collegiate 1-1, a great soccer victory since VES has been beaten by Collegiate since 1986. Their best complete game was against Christ Church which lasted for 80 minutes .
The team as a whole has done a really great job but
there are a few players, two in particular, who have done especially welL Bernard Reams and Alex Solyom each scored 9 goals the entire season and they are both ranked in the top 10 players with the highest num- ber of points in our league.
The two goalies did an out- standing job as welL Al- though Hugh Caperton was injured early in the season, he managedtoplayin11I2 games. Thea Highsmith took the place of Hugh and managed to have a great season. He played in 12 1/2 games and in those games there were 6 shut-outs.
These guys have played really great this season and have made VES very proud of them. The team has worked together well and has come out on top. The Varsity Soccer Team is another team to add to all of the other great teams that we have here at VES!!

her fourth year at VES, and her

She enjoys coaching and will
continue to coach for as long as
she can. She feels that the
future of field hockey at this
school is a bright one. Since the
development of a Junior

more players come with knee problem, but she never Cuccio, the goalie, kept the

Mrs. Spencer says, "The attitude of the people on the team whether playing on the field or sitting the bench was great." This factor was impor- tant to the season's accom- plishments.
Steward offense at bay for whatseemedaneternity. One player unfortunately hit an impossible goal to reach and scored. So VES lost the cham- pionship 1-0. The game was not only exciting because of the intensity with which it was played but also because of the fans. People who had never come to see a field hock-

the All Star Team. Leslie Pack

Suzanne Fawcett was the

The Championship game played against the Steward School was a heart wrenching one. At the end of regulation
ey game came for the occa- sion. It was a cold, dreary evening and time for dinner, but the fans stayed through- out the whole game. The excitement off the field con- tributed to the game excite- ment on the field. It really made a difference.
The team could be described in many ways: Mrs. Spencer chose, "A lot of heart." If the field hockey team next year has even half as much heart as this year's team did, there is no doubt that the championship will belong to VES. The wonder- ful attitudes of all the players make a real difference in the way they play. To watch the girls "go for the gold" as they did this year is something no one will ever forget. Just keep on trying and listen to the constructive criticism given by Coach Spencer and the 1994 championship will be ours.
