Sports J.V. Sports
By Rebecca Todd
VES had a very productive year in the core teams, the J.V. and deacon teams. The teams that have built a very strong core are Deacon Soccer, J.V. Football, a n d J.V. Field Hockey. The Varsity teams will ultimately benefit.
J.V. Field Hockey had a long, tough year. Under the wonderful coaching of Ms. Josephs, they learned the fun- damentals of the game, the thrill of the chase, and the way to play until it's over. The wonderful efforts by everyone will make Varsity even that
field hockey team played their hearts out, and that's what the game is all about.
J.V. Football went 1 and 3, but that is a lot, since many of the players didn't even know the positions that they wanted to play. Coach Mundy says "The team worked hard, learned a lot, and by the end of the season there was a lot of growth. The games were always tough, but the boys made it all worth while to be out there." This is what deter- mination is all about. Watch out Christ Church, VES Varsity football will be receiv- ing some guys next year who know how to play the game.
Deacon soccer was coached by Doc Goodwin and Mr.
Nielsen. These boys were for the most part illiterate about the game of soccer, but by the end of the season, they became rough and tough. They came a long way in the short season, and with this they will carry the fundamen- tals they learned on the Deacon soccer team for the rest of their soccer careers. Doc Goodwin says about the team "They worked very hard, improved, and hopeful- ly had a lot of fun. Every game, we tried to get every- one to play." This shows the incredible teamwork among the boys. Next step is J.V. then on to conquer the varsity fields. These boys did an excellent job over the season.
The varsity made an honest effort to hit the boards.

The varsity started out slow, trailing 9 points in the first quarter. The alumni kept their lead in the second half with a score of 35-16. The varsity team had everything going for them except overall age and experience; for exam- ple some of the alumni play- ers on the court have been playing basketball for more years than some of the varsity players have lived. After the second half coaches Huffman
ALUMNUS POINTS
and Leake must have given the varsity team a great pep talk because they came out of the locker room ready to win. The team's extra drive paid off because in the third quar- ter the varsity tied the alumni at 11 points and in the fourth quarter the varsity turned up the heat, out-scoring the alumni 10-15. Their effort was not enough to win and the alumni took the varsity for the second consecutive year with a score of 56-42.

Weather Thaws for VES Arctic Road Race
by Hunter Morrison
VES sponsored the 17th
annual Arctic Road Race on Sunday, February 1, 1994 - one of the few sunny days Lynchburg has seen since mid-November. According to the race organizer and faculty member Big R. (Mr. Finlay), all conditions were perfect for running.
Out of a field of 93 runners of all ages, the winner was VES student David Guerrant, a member of the track team and accomplished runner.
His time for the lOK race was an impressive 34:29. Other VES runners were students David Bill, Rutland Tyler, Charlie Reeves, Ceo von Hoff, Terry Hershner, Greg Molek, Colby Rankin, and Fran Stone, who won her age divi- sion with a time of 51:23. Haidee Heyward, Margaret Lyle Jones, and Jennifer Smith entered the Power Walk Division. Many other mem- bers of the VES community participated: Mrs. Finlay, Ms. Wirth and Mr. Moore worked
the finish line, Mr. Daniel lent his Siberian Huskie to pose next to a red Arctic dog sled constructed by Steffen Doyle and Malcolm Burgess, Mr. Mundy provided registration and race course help, dozens bought race T-shirts, and many, many others provided support help in a variety of ways. In saying "thank you" to everyone, Big R. says that plans are underway for attracting an expanded field and providing more festivities for the race in 1995.
