From Will Hobbs' blocked field goal return of eighty-five yards for a touchdown to Ben Beale's caused fumble on the one yard line, the 1990 season was filled with excitement and big plays. Led by eleven seniors, es- pecially team captains Matt O'Brien, Ben Beale, and Ben Simmons, the Bishops were a focused, goal-oriented team throughout the season. With this direction, the team closed out the year with its best record, 5-3, since 1981.0ffensively, the team was led by the running of Ben Simmons and Scott Gluck who combined for 800 yards. Tom Hodges and Jeff Cook were the primary ingredients of the passing game with Cook catching five touchdown passes from Hodges. Defensively, Ylvisaker, Park, O'Brien, and Beale anchored a consistently solid defense. Ylvisaker led the team in tackles and Dehler Hart led the team in interceptions with three. Patrick Auth led the special teams with an impressive year as the kicker and punter. His point-after- touchdown against Cumberland enabled the team to win the game, 7-6. Jeff Cook led the way with return yardage and always pre- sented a threat to break one for a touch- down. The future is bright for VES football. The seniors of the 1990 team have opened the door for many more winning seasons.
