The Varsity Wrestling team had an outstanding season finishing 11-4. The only losses were to Prep League champion Woodberry Forest, the runner up FUMA, and local teams, Jefferson Forest and Cave Spring. The team did very well at tournaments coming in fourth at the Amherst Christmas Tournament, third at the LCA Tournament, fifth at the Prep League tournament, and a very strong fourth in the State tournament.
The team was led by senior captains Mike Cothran, Ben Beale, and Rob Cantrell, who all had outstanding seasons. Our other seniors who have given us tremendous leadership this season are Steven Wandrei, Jon Ochsner, Middy Hirsh, Ryan Royston, Alf Wang, Erik Kern, and Graham Kirkman.
The winner of the Spirit and Sportsmanship award was John Karahasan. The only place on the roster that allowed him to wrestle Varsity also meant that he had to drink a gallon of water before each weigh-in just to make weight.
The Most Improved went to Erik Kern, who went from no victories last year to leading the team with 24.
The Duchworth Award went to both Rob Cantrell and Jon Ochsner. Jon had a 17-7 record on the varsity level, and Rob, a three-year starter on the team, finished with a 17-6 record.
The Most Outstanding Wrestler Award went to Mike Cothran, who finished with a 22-2 record. He won the MVP award at the Amherst Christmas tournament and was the solitary VES Prep League champion.
Coach O'Keefe advises Mike Cothran on his match.
