The Varsity Basketball team finished its most successful season in over a decade. The team finished the season with a 12-1 0 record and a ninth place ranking in the final state poll.
• Led by Captains Matt O'Brien, Tufty Taylor, and Jeff Cook, the squad reeled off many impressive victories including a tournament championship in the annual Holiday Classic Christmas Tournament. Matt O'Brien was named tourna- ment MVP and Jeff Cook was named to the All-Tournament T eam.
Season sweeps of conference rivals Blue Ridge, Trinity, and St. Chris as well as victories over Woodberry Forest, Collegiate, and Durham Academy gave the team confidence to meet any challenge. Season highlights included an over- time win against Lynchburg's Heritage High School and a one point overtime loss to eventual state champions Christ- Church.
Individual awards and honors this season went to Tufty Taylor and Jeff Cook who were both named to the all-prep team. Cook was also named to the Lynchburg area all-city team and was voted MVP by his teammates.
Seniors Matt O'Brien, Sheldon Rhyne, Buddy Perry, and Patrick O'Keefe will be missed for the leadership they pro- vided this season. Next year returns with Tom Hodges 11.4 pts. per game, Chad Carter 11.8 pts. per game, Levester Thompson, Chris Pollard, Henry Heil, David Long, Jamar Jordan, and Chip Collins to continue developing the tradition of VES basketball. All these players deserve unending praise for their effort and dedication this season.
