CORE VALUES: EXPLORE • EXPERIENCE • SERVE
PURPOSE STATEMENT
To provide an opportunity for students to explore new areas of study, experience new places,
develop new skills, and serve their school and community all while developing a deeper sense of
community between their teachers and peers.
WHAT IS J-TERM?
J-Term is a two-week abbreviated semester in January where students get the opportunity to
partake in exploratory and experiential learning opportunities. These opportunities are made
available to students through J-Term Courses, Internships, and Trips.
J-Term allows for students to be challenged to explore both traditional and non-traditional areas of
study to further our school mission of students reaching their potential and impacting their culture.
We also recognize the importance of community at HCA. While this is something we already do well,
J-Term allows us the opportunity to excel in developing relationships and community.
COURSES
J-Term courses provide students with opportunities to experience new passions and areas of
studies. It also allows students the opportunities to see what their teachers are passionate about
outside of the classroom. The J-Term Course Catalog will be comprised of courses designed to
either align with the Academies or be exploratory in nature. Courses will be offered as either a full
day session or as a half-day session. The morning session will run from 7:50am – 11:00am, and the
afternoon session will run from 11:40am – 2:50pm. Below are some possible options for class titles:

INTERNSHIPS
All students will be required to complete an internship during either their Junior or Senior J-Term.
The internship is intended to allow students the opportunity to experience a professional work
environment in an area they are interested in pursuing as a career. The internship process will
provide connections for the students that could lead to future internships or career opportunities.
TRAVEL
Our goal in J-Term is to provide students with travel opportunities (either educational or
exploratory) during J-Term. These trips could be local, domestic, or international and would be
coordinated by the faculty sponsor overseeing the trip.
