TEAMWORK, TOGETHERNESS, AND SWEAT
The playing fields and gyms are our largest classrooms, and many of our finest teachers are also exceptional coaches.
The tradition of mens sana in corpore sano — a sound mind in a sound body — is central to a St. Albans education. Sports are part of the curriculum,
and every boy plays a sport almost every season. The goal — repeated
by headmasters, athletic directors, and coaches past and present —
is that every boy should go home every day with some sweat on him.
Establishing a respect for fitness, encouraging honorable sportsmanship and fair play, and channeling ambition and drive, competitive sports build both physical strength and moral rigor. Courage to persevere, commitment to excellence, and a desire to achieve personal and team success through generosity, mutual respect, and teamwork are traits that transcend athletics.
“Our IAC banners reflect
championships, but more importantly
they manifest honest effort and a
joy in realizing the most in
one’s team and oneself. Sports
are incredibly valuable tools for
building self-awareness and self-
knowledge, as well as building
strength and instilling in boys
the value of exercising—working
up a sweat—every day.”
