The ecstacies of the dream of a life-time finally came to a thrilling climax on one ove rcast aturday
afternoon at Brooks School in North Andover , Massachu etts. It was the re that the 1967 S. P. S. Football
team registered a decisive 29-6 victory to cap an amazing undefea ted season . Display ing an aggressiveness
and determination unprecedented in the School's sports history , the pl aye rs se t many school as well as
individual records. Striking almost as well from the air as on the ground , th e team amasse d a record total of
156 points. However, the defe nse, as always, held the key . Th ese "eleven angry boys" di spl aye d their
ability to stand firm in a clutch ituation time and time aga in , holding the o pposi tion to a record low of 3 1
points in six games.
The high point of the season came on Parent Wee kend when bo th the offe nce and the defe n e lived up
to expectations prese nted by a ve ry ex ten sive and nattering a rticle "S I. Paul 's Marches To Di x ieland Bea t" ,
which appeared in the Bosto n He rald just prior to th e game . eve r had an S. P. S. team worked
0
hard in
preparation fo r a contest , and victory was all theirs as they out-hustled Winche nd on 26-6 .
In retrospect , the newly employed sys tem of ga me ca ptain s introdu ced by Mr. Blake brought out the
spirit and leadership from th e Sixth Form necessa ry to ca rry the team through the sea on . Thu , with
everyone vying for the top spot th ere was never any le tdown in th e players' desire to pl ay the game. The
results? Jim Colby made first st ring Quarte rback on the All Prep team and Ewing Walker, Bill Hoehn , Craig
McNama ra, and Dave Andrews were Honorable Menti on. And there were many more on th e squad who
should have been named as well.
Finally, great tribute must be pai d to coaches Messrs. Blake, Mayer, and Gillespie who instilled within
the team the spirit and kn owledge to play the game. The School owes to them a great dea l for a memory
which will
remain with each of us; S. P. S. is numbe r one!
