The cross country team opened its season with a smashing win over a weak Milton squad , but went on to
rinish with a very disappoin ting 3-5 record . Losses to a gutsy Tilton team and a very strong Vermont
Academy squad rollowed the initial win , but the harriers came back to out-run Governor Dummer. There
was the annuaJ loss to perennially invincible Concord High, an d then, in a somewh at closer mee t, a loss to an
Andover team which had grea tly improved rrom the year berore . In a triangular meet with Proctor and New
Hampt on , the runners place d second to Proc tor , while smothering haple ss ew Hampton . The team ended
the season by placing rourteerith out or fifteen schools in the Class A interscholastics a t Williston.
Bill Bass was the leading runner, but unrortunately he was lost to the squad with an injury ror the last
hair or the season . He was rollowed closely by Ni ck Sullivan , rookies Ro n Ru sse ll an d Chris Sowley , and
Dave Coombs, wh o rought it out among themse lves ror the re st or the rirst five pOSitions. As well , Derrick
Balsam , Steve Hoy , Hugh Taylor, and Bill Markham we re consistent perrormers.
The squad did have depth , but did not have runners strong enough to place regu larly in the top three
slo ts, and as a resul t , usual ly finished in a cluster too rar down to do any good. Several or the key members
or the team were seniors in their fiISt year of the sport , and were just beginn ing to show their true mettle
when lhe season was almost at an end.
