Winter
On January 8th, rather later than usual , the
members of the school straggled in to begin the
Winter Term. Within a week the school welcomed
a new master , Mr. Charles Lockman , and bid a
fond farewell to Mr. Sturges, leaving to do some
extra-curricular graduate work in field tactics.
Soon after Mr. Lockman's arrival, the political
year began at Saint Paul's with a speech given by
Mr. William Evans, Republican Presidential candi–
date. Mr. Evans wa s closely followed by the year's
third Conroy Fellow, Mr. Arthur Schlesinger, the
noted historian and ex-presidential aide, who
spoke chie fly on recent history and the future of
the election year.
By January 25th the school was indeed ready
for a holiday and the conversion of St. Paul
brought great relief to all.
The day after the Conversion the first of three
important political figures , Governor George Rom–
ney , visited S. P. S. and addressed the school from
the Memorial Hall stage, leaving the floor open for
questions. Senator Eugene McCarthy was the next
Presidential candidate to visit. He arrived on
February 8th and followed the same pattern of
speech~uestion
period as Romney had . In be–
tween the visits of these two men , I may add , the
Band and the Glee Club gave an excellent recital
before a small but appreciative Memorial Hall
audience of about forty people .
Term
After McCarthy , Dance weekend commenced
and on Saturday, February 10, the Mish Talent
Show and Raffle were held. The winners of the
Show were Don Feary , Frank Rue , and T.
J .
Megear, and Mr. Chapman and Win Redmond
garnered the Raffle prizes of either skiis or
transporta tion fare to Bermuda.
When Dance Weekend ended , the fourth Pres–
idential candidate to visit the school, Richard M.
Nixon , arrived. Introduced in front of T.
V.
cameras by Fred Pope , Mr. ixon again followed
the same oratorical pattern as his predeces–
sors - Evans, Romney , and McCarthy.
During the next two weeks , the sixth Form
Show really began rehearsing and a well-needed
surprise holiday was granted all of us on February
29th. Three days later the Sixth Form presented a
show of unprecedented quality and refinement to
the delight of the whole school.
The next few days were hectic, last minute
grinds at
I.
S. P. projects and Term Papers were
finished for the March 6th deadline.
Finally , on Saturday , March 9th, the Glee Club
and Band went to Abbot Academy , and on
Thursday , March 14th the School departed for
vacation .
