The Soccer Team returned early for the first time this year , and Mr. Tracy used the extra practice and
the nine returning lettermen to compi le the winningest season in S . P. S. Soccer's short but very successful
history .
With four star ters from last year's 7-2-3 team, the starting line set the School scoring record with 25
goals. Captain Frank Rue was relied on heavily to feed the insides, and consistantly outran and outdribbled
his man before centering from his right wing position . His most effective move , however , was to ge t off a
half-field cross which curved 90 degrees acro s the penalty area. Centerforward Christos Alexopoulos and
next year's captain Alec McLane provided the scoring punch . Only injuries prevented McLane from
matching Alexopoulos' junior year total of ten goals. Christos, the Spartan Fla h, wa hi usual self, faking
the fullbacks with footwork and then beating th e goa lies with steady shots. Returning left wing Eric Pope
gave the line balance , making good use of his incredibly potent left foot.
Since Mr. Tracy teaches the short passing game, the moving force of the team is the halfback line . Center
half T. J . Megear excelled as a dribbler and playmaker, and controlled the attack , making particularly good
use of hi wing halves, Kip McCurdy and junior Roy Hunt , in setting up the wings for crosses. The
combination of Will Whetzel , with his agile dribbling and long clears, and Will Rogers, with his excellent
pOSition play , at fu llback made the defense . Rookie goalies Steve Ahlgren and Joe Priestley both cut off
many possible scores with their aggressive play .
The major accomplishment of the season was a 2- 1 victory ove r Andover, but thi s was more than
counterbalanced by the three losses and one tie for in all four contests S. P. S. outshot their opponents.
