Coach
Led predominantly by a large fifth form nu–
cleus, the S. P. S. Basketball team closed out the
season with three tough defeats, to end up in a tie
for fourth place in the Boston Prep League .
It
was
a year in which Coach Palin had hoped to "sneak
in the back door" and take the title , but the team
just could not win the big games.
After suffering three early season defeats , the
"hustle squad" began to pick up momentum as
they streaked to a seven and one record to pull
within two games of Roxbury Latin. This spurt
was highlighted by a brilliant victory over Dave
Sawyers' St. Mark's team, two cliff-hangers versus
Brooks and Nobles, and a thrilling overtime
victory over the " BIG" Governor Dummer team.
Unfortunately, the team (';ould not stay with
Browne and Nichols, a team they had to beat, and
with this loss the team sagged under the influence
of a big letdown , an inevitability , after having been
so close to the top .
The outside shooting and rebounding of both
Joe Priestley and John Hagerty was the margin of
victory , and " Bounds" Robinson hinted to many
an opposing forward that the game of basketball is
not all finesse . To add frosting to the cake , the
newly installed fast break led by Captain Jim
Colby wore the enemy to a frazzle.
With eight returning veterans, Mr. Palin can
look forward to a very fine season next year , and
perhaps the division title will be just that much
closer. Maybe then he' ll convince someone that
running can be fun.
