Close upon the openin~ of tl1e year itself, the football season commenced iu excellent style when we held the strong antl efficient Woodben,r sqnatl to a lone safety. This game "·as followed up a week later by an easy Yictor.v over Char- lottesville High School.
.Although the next two contr:;ts resulted in defeats for us at the hands of Greenbrier and J3lackstouc, the fighting spirit manifested agaiust the gwat odds encountered "·as most sig- nificant. \Ye emerged from this temporary slump by an in- teresting victory over Dam·ill(• 1Jigl1 School on the morning of October 30.
Perhaps the hardest fought strup:glc of the ycat· came a week later when we tied with Chatham Training School.
After a loss to R.-M. A., we completed our schedule in an
eminently satisfactory way by dcf<'ati11g Lynchburg High in
a decisive manner in an interesting and exciting game. I
The 1!)20 football season, as mmal, was marked by hard playi11g and a fightiug spirit, no matter what the situation. At the same time our clean, fair tnctics, whether at home or abroad, attracted widesprcncl favorable comment.
In particular this year's tram demonstrated the great value of 1mified play and careful training. In a squad which boasted of few conspicuous stars, and which contained much inexperienced, new material, the success we obtained was in lar~c measure due to the consistent team work developed.
Above the other players, though, the aggressive play.ing of Brown, J..oth, and Lee was noteworthy. Loth, as captain, set a high example of effective leadership, ·while in general his capable and gritty playing in every game kept him one of the most potent factors on the squad. Lee, by his terrific line plunges and vicious tackles, made such a large contribu- tion to the success of our efforts that he bas beeu given the task of leading next year's eleven.
