On the very next day after the opening of school the foot- ball squad reported to practice. Captain Lee had with him from last year's team, Loth, Braxton, Pierce, D_uke, Hitch- eock, and :Maddux. Under the excellent supervision of Coaches Branham and Gannaway these veterans, aided by
the new material, were soon formed into a fast and aggt·es-
si,·e machine.
The football season of 1021 was one of the best that V. E.
S. has ever enjoyed. Of seven games we won five, one was virtually a tie, and the other was a viciously fought battle which eudcd finally in our defeat. We started off by win- ning from Charlottesville High School, 13-0. We then won thrco more successive shut-out victories, from Roanoke Hi~h School, Shenandoah Valley Academy, and :McGuire's University School, the last named by the overwhelming score of ·18-0. After two weeks of rest, we took Randolph-Macon
