A New Record
Last month a V. E. S. track rec-
ord was broken for the first time since Tommy Crudup accomplished the feat of reeling off the quarter mile in 50.8 seconds back in 1939. Graham K,och of Arrington, Vir- ginia, threw the discus a distance of 123 feet to smash Jimmie Day's old mark of 119 feet, 9 inches.
In 1926, the year V. E. S. cap- tured not only the state crown, but also the South A tlantic champion- ship, James Day established a dis- cus record which has stood for eighteen years. Last year Trentham, a North Carolina giant, came very close to breaking that mark, not to mention his near record-smashes in the high jump and shot put. Koch was only Trentham's understudy then. but even so he could heave the discus far over the century mark.
On April 21, 1944, during the Hargrave meet, Koch achieved the goal that he had long sought to ob- tain and thus one of the oldest rec- ords in the track history of the Vir- ginia Episcopal School was broken.

Williams' 1SO foot javelin throw was outstanding as was Magill's 5:02 mile in which he finished ahead of Fork Union's Lawson by a nose. Summary:
