Dick is a second year boy and again resides on Third Main. He is not o nly a very colorful (peroxide) person, but also the "life of the party," or in our case, "the bullest in a bull session." "Duff" is one of the cheerleaders th is year and does a grand job. He is also a faithful stand- by on "The Meteor" staff.

Ambition in Life: To teach Dawson to play poker.
Greatest Concern: Matching wits with Mr. Ba rnum in physics class.
Sparetime Occupation: Getting up "burger parties" to the big metro~ polis.
This is Johnny's second year at V. E. S., he having been lured to the big institution from Fountain (Spoutville), N. C., by his last year's partner, "Bwak-wah" Trevathan. He made his letter in basketball last year and was a member of the varsity football squad this season. Johnny is taking it easy on "quiet, conservative" Second West this year and telling the "beach boys" about the carefree pleasures
of Carolina.

Emmett Shoffner and his wife visit- ed V. E. S. on November 9. The Shoffners live in Raleigh, N. C.
Laurence Keith Loftin was joined to Agnes Jennings in holy wedlock on November 16. Laurence was a counselor at V. E. S. in 1938-39.
1943
Arch Alexander is now attending
the University of Washington and Lee. Arch was co-captain of football in 1942, and made a baseball letter. He was a counselor· in 1942-43.
"Wait" Dixon will be married to Miss Esther Lou Albritton on Decem- ber 28. "Wait" was a counselor in '42-'43, co-captain of football with Arch Alexander in '42 (this edition of "The Meteor") and t he Sergeant-at- Arms of the "V" Club in '43.
1945
Graham Koch stopped by on De-
cember I. He was an important member of the track team and a cou nselor for two years. He's now in the U. S. Army Air Forces.
Beverly Owens stayed overnight here on a weekend from W ashington and Lee where he is going to school.
Jack Wellford visited the school last November 17. Jack was twice a member of the Honor Committee.

teor." He now goes to the University of North Carolina, where he is pledged to Zeta Psi, the fraternity to which almost all of the V. E. S. boys join if they go to U. N. C.
The following alumni were seen at the E. H. S. game: T. H. Maddux, ' 18, Harry Whitaker, '19, Spencer Buckner , ' 22, J o h n Dunn, '23, N e d Walter, '44, Val Stieglitz, '46, and Mr. and Mrs. Dawson with their daughters, Virginia Cooper and Louisa.
The alumni reported to be at the R.-M. A. game here were: Beverly Hutter, '21, Fred Wayland, '24, and wife; Strother Hale, '27, Robert I. Owens, '34, Fred Carrington, '41, Ben Trueblood , '41, and wife, and Gordon Poindexter, '43.
Mr. Philip Dawson, bursar for 25 years, was badly burned on the hands and face by hot paraffin, but is re- covering nicely. (M r. Dixon took "Uncle Phil's" place this year.)

Edgar Betty, now in the South- Pacific with the U. S. Army, made a short visit during his leave. He was one of the main participants in foot- ball and baseball, and made three letters, football, basketball, and base- ball, of which he was captain.
