Popular and Jazz - Once again Capitol records has released a hit album. It's Stan Kenton's "Artistry in Rhythm ." This album features Stan himself, June Christy on vocals, Vido Musso, Eddie Safranski, Shelly Manne, and Pete Rugolo's ar- rangements. "Misery in Me" fea- tures strictly blues singing backed by a strong rhythm section and solos by Kai Winding's trombone and by Boots Musselliis' alto sax. On the in- strumental side Eddie Safranski's bass and Shelly Manne's drums take the spotlight in "Safranshi" and "Artistry in Percussion," respectively. For a
fast, wild number, "Fantasy" does the job. There is a solo by Boots Mussullii on alto sax, and again strong rhythm. "Come Back to Sarrent" gives us an out-of-tempo solo by Vido Musso on tenor sax. He works into this number several different kinds of riffs which makes it much more interesting. "Opus in Pastels" is an experiment. Kenton uses no brass but features solos on an alto and baritone sax. The last number is "Artistry in Bolero," which features solos by Kenton, Sa- franski, Musso and Kai Winding. Both the jazz and popular record collector
can't help liking this album.
