Consecration of Bishop Gordon
Tho Rev. William Jones Gordon, 36. was consecrated Bishop of the Missionary District of Alaska in a very
beautiful and most impressive cere mony at the Church of the Goor:l Shepherd in Rnleiqh, May 18. Bishop Gordon who was 30 on May 6, is the youngest bishop elect eve r to be chosen in the Episcopal Church in the United States. (The Meteor, No- vember, 1947.)
The service opened with a long and heautiful procession o f the cho1r, lily members of the D1ocese of North Carolina. the members of the clergy. the bishoos. the consecrators and the bishop elect.

After the sermon Bishop Gordon was presented for consecration. The evidence of election was read. Bishop Gordon then gave the Promise of Conformity, which was followed by the Litany Hymn. Bishop Henry Knox Sherrill then examined young Gor- don in the articles of the church, after which the new bishop put on the complete robes of a bishop of the Episcopal Church.
The IS bishops present received Holy Communion with the family of the consecrated bishop. Tho reces sional hymn then concluded the cere- mo ny.
Th e new bishop has se rved in Alaska since 1943. As bishop he will now take over the spiritual leadership of so me 4 ,500 Episcopalians tw o- thirds Eskimo and one-third white, scattered throughout the entire terri- tory of Alaska.
Dr. and Mrs. Barton and Mr. and Mrs. Gannaway attended the con- secration. Dr. Barton explained this great honor and responsibility to the student body in study-hall when he returned. He also suggested +hot a check for $100.00 be drawn on the chapel collections to be added to Bishop Gordon's discretionary fund in Alaska. A note signed by the en- tire student body accompanied the
check. This note stated that the stu- dents of V. E. S. are extremely proud of the schools distinguished alumnus

The Rev. Harris M. Findlay, pastor of Our Lady of Nazareth Church, Roanoke, ond the only Roman Catho- lic priest among the alumni of V. E. S..* has been appointed assis· tant pastor of St. Joseph's Church, Martinsbu rg , W. Va. After leaving V. E. S. he studied for the priest- hood in Rome. In Roanoke he has taken an interest in civic affairs, is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and a director of the Family Service Asso- ciation.
