Bishops Open NewGym With a Bang
Playing in their new gymnasium for the first time the V. E. S. quintet started the 1950 season off by down- ing Bedford High School 61-21.
The Bishops started slowly and found themselves on the short end of a 4-0 count at the end of three minutes playing time. The score was deadlocked 5-5 at the end of the first quarter, but from there on in V. E. S. made a rout of the contest.
However Coach Hal Johnston found it necessary to put in his "crip- ples" Howie Pitt and Joe Crute whom he had hoped to hold out of the game for further rest.
Cullen Bradley, who is somewhat of .an unknown quantity, in that he runs hot and then cold from one game to t h e next was in fine form as he dropped 20 points through the hoops. Howie Pitt contributed 12 points to the Bishop attack, while Jim Winston and Joe Crute showed up
well defensively.
Center Bill Harwood led the others
with 9 points. Statistics-Bedford Game

terms with the veteran team from Chatham during the first half, but during the second half the cadets pulled away and their lead was never threatened.
With Howie Pitt, Cullen Bradley , and George Smith leading the at- tack, the Bishops took the lead in the first quarter and continued to make the game a nip-and-tuck affair throughout the first half. Holt's sharpshooting and Robert's fine re- bound work however, turned the tide, and the Cadets ran the score up in the final period.
George Smith led the V. E. S. scoring with 15 points followed by Bradley with 9 points.
. . . But Returned and Won Again
For the first time in seven years V. E. S. defeated its arch rival, W oodberry Forest. This marked the opening of the Bishop's State Prep League campaign and they showed that they have their eyes on the state title by taking a 40-33 victory.
Howie Pitt led the Bishop attack with 12 points. Dick Carrington and George Smith contributed 9 and 8 points respectively.
By far the outstanding player on the floor was the Tiger's forward,
Woodberry fought all the way and were closing the gap in the fourth period after Pitt had fouled out. But here the Bishops "froze" the ball and aided by two foul shots by Joe Crute, held the visitors at bay during the final minutes.
