WOULD-BE ALUMNI VIEW
Letter from Alumni
Secretary
Deor Alumni:
1• is hoped that every Alumnus will
wont to become on active member of the Association either by paying regular dues of two dollars a year or by contribu- ting more substantially to the Endow- ment Fund.
The ideo of helping sons of Alumni to o t l e n d V . E. S . i s a f i n e o n e , b u t t w o doiiMs a year will not go very far. We ere asking every Alumnus who can to moke a larger contribution such as sug- gested in the minu•es of the meeting of October 21.
Your school has maintained, through the yeors, o good reputation among the col- leges because of the thoroughness of the preparation given the boys before go- ing to college. We expect to maintain !hot reputation. You ~now the type of boy we want ot V. E. S.
The athletic program could be much improved with a little concerted effort on the port of the Alumni. In your home town, make an effort to encourage boys of schol~s!ic and athletic ability to attend
V . E . S . W e h o v e n o a~hletic s c h o l a r - ships and wont none. However, through the Alumni, the enrollment could be in- creased to the extent that a new domi- tory would be necessary.
With the help of the Alumni in any town, we hope to organize more local chapters during the next year. Norfolk, Richmond and Roanoke ore next on the list and then others.
Please give this matter some serious thought and let's make the Alumni Asso- cio~ion a living thing.
Sincerely yours,
J. W. GANNAWAY Alumni Secretory.

William E. Massie is the possessor of one of the few remaining old water-power flour mills still operating in Virginia. This relic was built in
1822 by Massie's grandfather at what is now the small village of Tyro, Vir- ginia. "Captain" Billy Massie, who is a combination farmer, postmaster, and general store operator, says that the mill has been altered very little over the years. The aged structure still contains various old tools, re- minders of yesterday. Many of the old hand-hewn wooden hinges are still in use. This mill is, .truly, a re- markable example of the craftsman's art of years gone by.
1926
Shepperd Strudwick, who recently starred in the movie, "All the King's Men," played the leading role op- posite Celeste Holm in the Washing- ton production of the play "Affairs of State."
1939
Francis Bailey of Sanibel, Florida visited V. E. S. for a number of days during October.
1945
William Field, an instructor at Staunton Military Academy, spent a few days here in October.
1947
Lewis Armstead, who is attending the University of Virginia, and Robert Field also of the Charlottesville school, attended the V. E. S.-St. Paul football game here on November 4.
