Final Loss, To R. M. A.
The Bishops fought a tough battle all the way, but the speed and depth of Randolph-Macon Military Acade- my's squad proved too much, and R.-M.A. rolled to a 20-7 victory at Front Royal.
V.E.S. scored its sole touchdown in the last quarter on a series of end sweeps and off-tackle smashes which put them on the one, where Sonny
Basketball Prospects
At the opening call for basketball prospects, there was a turnout of 30 varsity candidates. Coach Donald Bartol thinks the squad, now cut to 14 members, can come through with a winni ng season, if the boys co- operate. The loss of the backbone of last year's team, combined with an almost complete lack of height, would seem to demolish any team. How- ever, the lack of height, our greatest handicap, will be counteracted by speed, maneuverability, and decep- tiveness. The team is expected to be better than previous squads, due to better ball handling, a sounder defense, and more accurate shoot- ing. The team will probably be built around the following: Jimmy David- son, with terrific shooting ability, Sonny Peirson, with his speed and de-
fensive ability, Bill Stokes, aggressive and a real competitor, and "Gump" Lowe, with deceptive ball handling, and the followin g newcomers: Scotty McCracken, with dangerous defens- ive ability, Jimmy McCurry, a terrific ball handler, and "Bull" Smith, a good man from the pivot spot.
To counteract its deficiencies, the team will have to be on the go throughout all the games, constantly driving and cutting from single or double posts, to set the opponents off balance. To play this Metropoli- tan type ball, good conditioning is essential for the lightning-like scoring thrusts which are a part of this brand of play. Coach Bartol expects to use all the defenses in his repertoire; zone, man·to-man, 2-2-1 , and all the variations thereof.
The team is lacking in nothing ex- cept height, and Coach Bartol thinks that if the boys adopt a will to co- operate and win, we will turn out a championship quint.
