The Headmaster's Study
The date is Thursday, December 4th. The time is the quiet sixth period. Why the sixth period is quiet, I have never been able to learn but I have often observed that it is the quietest hour of the day. And in its quietness today I am thinking two weeks ahead.
Two weeks from today at this hour the corridor outside my office will be filled with suitcases and bags of all descriptions, while their owners will be squirming in classroom or study hall eagerly waiting for the hands of the clock-my, what a laggard that clock is!-to reach five minutes after three. For then with a shout and a rush the Christmas Vacation will begin and in a few moments these halls will be silent and lonely, echoing in hollow fashion only an occasional footfall.
You boys will go home in high spirits, your heads full of thoughts of mother 's cooking, of Christmas gifts awaiting you, of parties, of all the happiness the season can bring. And you may not realize how eagerly your parents are awaiting the hour of your arrival at home, how they are planning to make your holidays as happy as possible. In the midst of your festivities and happiness, in the midst of all that is done for you, can you find the time and the true Christ- mas spirit to think for a moment of those at home who are doing so much to let you have a good time? Can you find some way to let them know that you appreciate what they do for you? I do not have in mind an expensive gift done up in white tissue and red ribbon and bearing a Santa Claus tag saying "Love from Son." I am thinking rather of those little
acts of thoughtfulness prompted by true affection which mean so much more to parents than any tangible gift you can give them. Let them know not only by your words but by your deeds also that you want to be a real part of their Christmas.
And now, as you hurry out to taxi and to the car from home, to bus, to train and to plane, we say to you two words ever old; yet ever kept new in spirit,
