By Jim McCurry
The Bishops of last year rang out cheers of "wait 'til next year." Next year is here. Looking in our crystal ball of sports we see this is the year for V. E. S. athletics. No race horse predictions, just statin ' facts. Eleven football lettermen and nine baseball lettermen give a nucleus of success in any league. E. H. S., HERE WE
COME!!!
Clap caloused mitts for Stuart
Harris, former V. E. S. athlete who is holding down the center posts for U. Va.... Reports coming from the football camp of N. C. State have high praise for Sam Peirson, one of V. E. S.'s greatest all-round athletes.
Seems the Southern Golfers, Sneed, Boros, Heafner, Ward and Campbell have been taking their share of honors around the circuit lately.
Basketball notes ... Six feet, seven inches of stratospheric humanitv has been seen in the vicinity of the V. E. S. gymn, dunking balls through
that too . . . too low hoop. Oh, Don, you've got yourself a guy.
Junior Varsity
The Junior Varsity shapes up this way, under the leadership of Mr. Wyatt:
Returning from last year's squad are Harper and Derringer at tackle and end respectively. Braxton, J ohn- stone and Norfleet return to fill the quarter-back and two half-back pos:- tions. Newcomers on the line are Kemp, Houck, Parker, Quillen, Puqh, Dulaney, Donald. Pendleton and Til- man. Top new backfield candidates are Hassell, Cranz, Antrim, Spencer and Van Loan.
The J.V.'s open the season against Amherst. This team gave the Bishops their initial and worst licking last year.
130 Lb. Football Team
Coach Don Bartol says that his
squad looks good in practice so far. His team will play city league teams, although they will not be a member of the city league.
Dave Hyer and "Bruiser" Hutton shape up as the best linesmen. Other members of the line are, White at center, Atherholt W., at guard along with the two Webbs, and Fuller at tackle. Woolery is the best back on the team. He is backed by George,
'
Front Row, Left to Right: Hunt, Dirom, Wiley, Emory, Kemper. Back Row, Left to Right: Barber, M., Hutter, Barber, J., Watts, Davidson, Farinholt.
SPORTS
Football
The V. E. S. Bishops have begun preparation for an eight game schedule beginning with Miller School. Coaches Schulte and Lee have had over fifty prospects. The squad has been cut to thirty and its strength seems to be well balanced.
The line, bolstered by the return of five lettermen, ought to hold its own against any in the state. From end to end they have depth-Lea Powell and letterman John Hunt are very capable flankmen backed up by small but fast Charlie Kellogg. Alec
Dirom and Tal Kemper lead the vanguard in the tackle positions backed up by two boys who would fit equally well at tackle or guard, letterman Arthur Emory and 208 lb. Jim Chandler. Jim Wiley and C. R. Jones taken over the guard positions. Center is the only position with no ex- perience behind it. Bull Smith and Brent Nash are battling for the posi- tion.
In the backfield, directing the split T will be letterman Blair Farin- holt backed by Milton Barber who is also a standout offensive back. The fullback slot will again be filled by
I ~otelling, E . , J a e g e r , B y n u m , B a r - row, and Ross. Maybe now we will see the much talked of tactics and strategy of coach Don Bartol.
letterman "Joltin" Joe Barber, one of the few bright spots in a poor season last year. He will be backed by Mike Spear. The versatile Stephenson will l~e mentioned as a half-back. Bill seems at home anywhere on a foot- ball field. There are three lettermen battling for the half-back positions, Jim Davidson, Chauncy Hutter and
Bob Hughes. Davidson will undoubt- edly hold down a defensive half spot aside from his offensive duties.
This writer looks for a very success- ful season for the "Fighting Bishops."
