Get that Ball, Jap! JAYVEE ACTIVITIES
Since V.E.S. started its season, its Jayvee team has seen four new ad- ditions to the starting line-up. John Flippin was with the team for two games b e f o r e he was pulled up t o the varsity. In the A.M.A. game, he scored I0, and in the Hargrave game he scored 9.
Tex" Harrington was pulled up for the Hargrave game and has been with the Junior Bishops ever s·nce. The fast little guard has been an involuable aid in the backcourt. The other two, Dillon and Gregory, who also joined the team for the Hargrave game, have been of in- estimable value. Dillon has scored 13, 13, 9, and 12 points, respective- ly and is 2nd man on the team with a 9.4 point average per game. Greg- ory is not far behind with a 9 point average per game. For his two 3ames, Flippin had a 9.5 average. For the rest of the starters, Har- rington, Barber and Spratley each
have a 2.8 average and Smith has a I0.3 average.
On January 22, 1959, Hargrave's Junior Varsity basketball team came to V.E.S. Many now wish they hadn't. Although the Junior Bishops were aided by two new recruits, Dillon and Gregory who were "borrowed" from the varsity, they couldn't seem to win. At the end of the first quarter things looked pretty respectable with
Hargrave leading 9-7. At the end of the game Hargrave was still lead- ing 61-39. High scorer for the cadets was Grossman with 15. High scorer for the Bishops was Dillon with 13 and Flippin with 9.
The Jayvees were ready to win one when they met Covington Boy's Home ot V.E.S. At the end of the first quarter the Covington team was ahead 6-3. Each team scored I0 points in the next two quarters which were marked by a sudden Bishop drive at the end of the first half. The last quarter saw the lead change hands several times. A lay up in the last half minute by Logan for Cov- ington. V.E.S. missed its chance to win the game in the last seconds when Covington surrounded the Bishop's last shot and just held on until the clock ran out. The team from the Boys' Home won 35-34.
High scorers for the Boys' Home w e r e R a n s o m a n d Lo g a n w i t h 12 each. High scorers for V.E.S. were Smith with 16 points and Barber with
10.
Next the boys from Miller School came to play the Bishops. The sec- ond quarter proved fatal to the V.E.S. team. In this quarter, Miller School scored eighteen points and although the Bishops scored four- teen, this four point deficit was re- sponsible for the low scoring as the scoring in the other quarters was the same for both teams, hence, Miller School won 57-53.
This was the highest scoring game yet for V.E.S. High scorers for Mil- ler School were Holt with 17 and
Ramsey' with 15. High scorers for V.E.S. were Dillon and Smith with
13 each and Gregory with 12. (Continued on page 9, col. I)
15 AND UNDER
With two games left to play the 15 and Under team has won six games and lost six. The Baby Bis- hops won two and lost three in the City League and defeated the Bed-
ford Freshman team.
The line-up is almost the same, the only change occurring when Har- rington moved up to the J .V.'s. Vigor, Birdsong, Nelson, and Bloom have filled in for him.
The Baby Bishops defeated Brook- ville in a City League game, 34-27, behind Small's 14 points. Trailing by 6 points at the half the team played good ball the rest of the way. Wood and Harrington had 7 points apiece for V.E.S. Greger got 17 for Brook- ville.
Playing their first game without Harrington, the Bab'y' Bishops lost to Perrymont 41-16. Superior height was the story as the team never led. Wood had 7 points to leod the team and Puckett had 13 for Perrymont.
Playing good ball all the way and then getting hot in the closing moments, t h e Baby Bishops b e a t Rivermont 29-22. The team held a slight lead throughout. W ood scored I0 and Small had 9 to lead the scoring.
