Varsity Soccer Tearn Is Challenge To All Foes
With the greatest of ease, wing Hamp Shuping flies in to prevent his obviously worried opponent from getting to the ball first.
A determined Gunner Murphy uses some fancy footwork to maneuver the ball through the tightly-knit defense set up by the other team.
With the loss of most of last year's starting team,
the Varsity Soccer team
opened the 1969-70 season facing a formidable challenge.
The challenge was met
surprisingly well as the Bishops
immediately tied
last year's victory record
by winning their first two games.
The team's strength
was centered around the few hooters
from last year's team,
including co-captains Fielding Jones, Charlie Mahan,
T. Barker Dameron, along with leading scorer Hampton Shuping and fullback Bruce Guignard.
The addition of several talented new boys, such as forward Prem Thoonkapbalin from Bangkok, Thailand,
and post-graduate Tim Sullivan,
filled the gap from the loss of last year's seniors. Because of their early victories
and the prospect of a most successful season, the chances for a trip to the state tournament looked promising for the first time
in several years.
