In the latest edition of Old
160, Mr. Ainslie explicitly
stated that one of the key deter- minants to success in later life was one's degree of participa- tion in extracurricular ac- tivities. These activities include numerous clubs (debating club, science club), athletic teams,stu-
dent Vestry, or community pro- ject groups. With free time severly limited and highly priz- ed, I feel that the school unintentionally discourages the student from participating in these or other worthwhile ac-
ed into by athletic coaches; secondly, it serves to increase the student's day by another hour which once again works to decrease his free time.
The solution to the problem is this, either an abridged school work day, or a decrease in the amount of homework. To abridge the school day, V.E.S. would probably have to abolish manditory athletics, and star( a physical education program. ~ince this solution seems highly unlikely the answer seems to be less homework. Not the aboli- tion of all homework just a slight decrease from two hours to one and a half or a policy

I seem to try to follow in my brother's footsteps, not that it bothers me but I just can't wres-

informative example of what I
am speaking about. After nine
hours (8:00-5:00), of physically
and mentally draining hours of
classes and athletics, he is ex-
pected to do two or more hours
of homework a night (plus a
term paper). This eleven hour very thoroughly,; this extra
total leaves him little excess time to do what he enjoys. IT is hardly reasonable to expect an over burdened student to devote his spare time to a club which more often than not, in- volves still more work.
time would allow him to do this. If a student has gotten behind in a class he can do some catch up homework over the weekend.
Whatever the solution, a change is definitely needed. High school students are not yet

The snow continued to fall un- til about 9:30 A.M. and left the VES campus covered in a white blanket. It had melted by the time school let out, much to the demise of the boys looking for a
quick snowball fight before athl11tics.
To think that I could be skiing in Bogue Sound instead of trudging through the snow in
the Blue Ridge, brings the dreaded "Deep Winter Syn- drome" menacingly closer. So,
