By John Ervin Although the VES Cross·
Country team did not finish first in the prep league as last year, it did conclude a successful season at both the prep league and the state meets. In the prep league meet Frank Andrews came in fourth place, Max Stephens came
in seventh place, and surprising· ly enough Lyall Gordon finished third for the team in sixteenth plar~:. The team as a whole finish· ed third in the meet loosing only to Blue Ridge and Fork Union. In
the state meet the top three fini ben for VES were Frank Andrea at foruth plaee, Max Stephens at eight place and Her- don Stokea finiabed sixteenth place for the third place on the
team. In the state meet VES
finished in second place losing only to Fork Union.
Overall the cross-country team ranked third for the season in the prep-league with a·record of four wins and one loss in dual meets. The team captains, Frank
Andrews, Max Stephens, and Brian Sebrell, are commended for their outstanding per-
formances for their leadership throughout the year. Next year tht> following runners; Lyall Gor-
don, Herdon Stokes Jim Christen and Conrad Adams will be leading the team. We are look· ing forward to another success· fulseason from the cross-country
team next year and maybe another prep-league champion- ship.

The VES junior varsity foot· ball team had a sloppy season. With a series of errors during
each game this JV squad couldn't get a consistent enough offen- sive drivt> to move the ball into scoring position. The defense, however, proved to be most ef- fective during the course of the season. With hard hitting and good clean tackling, the defense
proved to be the stronghold of the JV team.
VES suffered their first lose to Fork Union Military Academy. The score 16-6 does not at all describe the play of the well in- tended JV squad. Even though it was their first game and ex- perience was on the weaker side,
the JV held up. Only because of a bad play in the fourth quarter the chances of victory were slim.
The second rivialary was St. Christophers where the Bishops unfortunately played an inten-
sive game only to come up with a
score 0-0. This gave the JV squad
new hope and a chance for
victory.
Then victory was almost near as Blue Ridge rolled into Lyn- chburg. The new minded team went out on the field with new hope and victory in their eyes. The offense and defense both had
oustanding results to put the JV ahead 8-0 at the end of the fourth quarter. The team with· new hopes had to keep their cool to face Woodberry the following
week. VES all hopes weren't in
the boys. VES went up against
Woodberry with hard hitting and
positive side. The JV held up to Woodbery and for a while ana it looked like there was a possi- ble win but a series of mistakes
and errora denied the Bishops a

intended rivialary was Wood- berry 1.8 VES 6.
The final and last, game of the season was against North Cross with all hopes of victory lost, VES played as if they couldn't beat the Deacon squad. A series of injuries and hurt players out for the season the JV couldn't have enough strong players to
assure any type of victor). The
final score was North Cross 1", VES 0.
Overall the JV had a good team at the beginning of the year, but a series of injuries denied several important
players to play their roll on the squad. The overall affect of this is, VES would have a winning football team if they were not
plagued with injuries.
