IV
Support our students in developing the intellectual and emotional skills necessary for them to engage with and contribute to their communities and to live meaningful lives of service, leadership, and contribution to the greater good.
“Whenever you feel a stirring
inside to do something really brave, something especially kind: to generously share what you have,
to speak up for people who aren’t getting what they need, maybe to call someone who you fear is alone, pay attention. Pay attention to that stirring, and do what it tells you to do.”
—MARIANN EDGAR BUDDE, BISHOP OF WASHINGTON IN A CATHEDRAL SERVICE FOR OUR STUDENTS
Service
and çivics
Looking up to Washington National Cathedral and out to the United States Capitol, our campus serves as a constant reminder of the school’s motto, Pro Ecclesia et Pro Patria — For Church and For Country — and of our mission to prepare boys to develop and use their spiritual, intellectual, artistic, and physical gifts not for them- selves alone, but in service of the greater good. Nurturing a lifelong commitment to service starts with helping them recognize their responsibility to make positive contributions to their most imme- diate communities, including their families, peer groups, school, neighborhood, and city. Increasing the academic and extracurricular opportunities for community and civic engagement will deepen our students’ understanding of themselves and their communities and will help them cultivate relationships beyond the Cathedral Close that affirm the dignity, humanity, and contributions of others.
