Shadow & Bone/Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
The Netflix adaptation of this beloved book series has brought
more attention to the story than ever. The original trilogy, Shad-
ow and Bone, follows Alina Starkov, a young woman with new-
found powers in a world full of magicians known as Grisha. Ali-
na’s powers’ impact on a war-ridden society puts pressure on her
and those around her, causing her path to peace and freedom to
become complicated. Kaz Brekkar is then introduced in his own
duology, Six of Crows. The same intricate fantasy storyline and
magic from the original trilogy carries on in Kaz’s story of a fast-
paced heist. Found family, betrayal, and sacrifice fill the pages of
Leigh Bardugo’s thrilling Grishaverse.
Knives Out, directed by Rian Johnson
Murder mysteries are common across literature, plays, movies,
and shows, but perhaps the popularity of the genre has made
a truly great whodunit rare. Knives Out is this rarity. The stage
is set in a gradiose mansion, full of secrets and deception. The
owner of the mansion’s death catches the interest of a detective,
who then takes a deep dive into the lives of the victim’s family.
Each character is suspicious, and no one can be trusted. With
familiar faces like Chris Evans, the movie’s charm is its ability to
be both warm and thrilling. It leaves the viewer waiting to find
out what happened while still involving themes of family and
comedy.
Wallows
A soundtrack to summer is an important part of pool days, lake
trips, and late sunsets. Wallows is one of those bands that is per-
fect for any summer occasion. With upbeat tempos and a care-
free feel to the band’s albums, their discography is mood-lifting
and exciting. Wallows’ upcoming performance in St. Louis, and
ultimately their entire tour, is helping the band’s popularity
immensly. Their sound has a vintage feel to it, with songs like
“1980s Horror Film” and “Pleaser” making sure listeners are nev-
er bored. Finally, a feature from Clairo on “Are You Bored Yet?”,
which ended up being Wallows’ most popular song yet, was able
to bring in fans of the featured artists’ work to make the band
more mainstream.
