The Top 10 Things Cor Jesu Has Taught Me
A look back at the most valuable lessons I’ve learned over the last four years...
By Lilly Aboussie ‘22
1) A caffeine addiction is nothing to be ashamed of.
When walking the halls of CJ at any point during first hour, you’re likely
to find plently of students carrying an energy drink or a fresh cup of cof-
fee. I must say, props to Starbucks corporate for fueling our girls’ addic-
tions by perfectly placing a shop at Gravois and Rock Hill... very strategic
move. Regardless, we have all come to accept and even appreciate the
caffeine cravings at our school.
2) No makeup, brushed hair, or shaved legs? No problem!
The idea of not having to look like you’re about to walk the red carpet is of-
ten talked about regarding all-girls schools. However, it is very, very true; no
one is here to judge. Forgot to shave? Easy, throw on some leggings. Not in
the mood to battle with your hairbrush in the morning? Whatever! Just throw
your hair in a claw clip. Looks are the least of our worries at CJ.
3) It is perfectly acceptable to throw oranges at girls in
the Commons in order to manifest a snow day.
Yes, I am looking at you, Ms. Ahrens. I can cofidently say that was one of the
weirdest, yet most special, events that occured in my four years at CJ. Everyone
knows that you are supposed to put an orange in the fridge once the meteorolo-
gist says there is a chance of snow. That said, our beloved Ms. Ahrens made sure
that each and every girl went home with an orange to put in the refrigerator as
soon as they left that day.
4) French fries pair well with anything.
Like seriously, anything. The cafe’s fries are a fan favorite, and
I think there’s a fair change that we grab the perfectly battered
delicacies at least once per week (at least I do). It doesn’t matter
if the special is French toast or a Swiss turkey melt, you can bet
your bottom dollar that fries will be purchased as a side dish.
5)Nuns are real people too.
Modern-day horror films depicting religious life and grandparents’ stories
of nuns can cause many people to be wary of religious sisters. However, my
exposure to the ASCJ at Cor Jesu has opened my eyes to religious life: our sis-
ters are not cloistered, quiet, and holier-than-thou. They are actually very real,
open, and have senses of humor! Being a part of a community that includes re-
ligious sisters has been an amazing experience, and has permanantly changed
my view of them for the best.
