Choir Students Travel to New Orleans for Musical Immersion

Performing in the Big Easy was something that the Concert Choir had
been looking forward to since last summer. Music Director Kathleen
Wobbe Pottinger ’88 and Symphonic Orchestra Director Carol Bauer
planned the experiential trip to New Orleans to give the students a
unique opportunity to perform in structures that provided significant
           historic context.
“There were some powerful, emotional memories made in New Or-
leans that will forever leave an impact on me,” said choir member, Anna
           Brummell, ’19.
“Although I had heard the girls sing several times throughout the trip
at the WWII museum, the Lambeth House senior center, and the St.
Louis Cathedral, nothing prepared me for the spontaneous performance The choir sang at St. Louis Cathedral (pictured), the World War II

moving experience – along with Sr. Veronica’s inspiring words encourag-

the men and women who lived in those quarters and labored in the
fields. It was a wonderful way to end a remarkable trip and an experience
           I won’t soon forget.”
Principal Sr. Veronica Beato ’74 added, “We were in a grassy area
by ourselves as they sang facing a field where the slave quarters used to
be. Their song was a blessing for all those who once lived there. It was a Choir members touring and performing: Carrie Metzler ’18, Claudia Sahm ’18,

Mother Clelia Merloni Soon To Be Beatified

As 2018 began, all of us at Cor Jesu, along with the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
and friends throughout the world, rejoiced at the news that on January 26, 2018, Pope
Francis signed the Decree of a Miracle through the intercession of Mother Clelia Mer-
loni, foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
On January 9, 2018, the Ordinary Session of Cardinals and Bishops of the Congrega-
tion for the Causes of Saints, recognized with a unanimous affirmative vote, the miracle
attributed to the intercession of our Foundress, Mother Clelia Merloni. This was the final
phase of the process of recognizing the miracle under examination by the Congregation
for the Causes of Saints, which took place in Brazil in 1951. This now cleared the way for
her beatification, something for which we have prayed for many years. The next step was
for the Vatican to set the date for the Mass of Beatification of Mother Clelia Merloni.
On April 10, we received the news that the Mass of Beatification of Mother Clelia will
be held on November 3, 2018, in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Rome, Italy.
This final step of beatification is the Church’s official recognition of Mother Clelia’s holiness. We can approach her more
confidently as our intercessor and model. Once the person is beatified, he or she receives the title Blessed and may be vener-
ated in the liturgical worship of the Church in a designated area.
If you have a particular devotion to her or have received any favors, large or small, through her intercession, we welcome
with enthusiasm and gratitude your written testimony.
