Mrs. Ninoshka Boylston presented a workshop inspired by Kehinde Wiley to art teachers at the NCAEAAbby Gwinnett Hope Elliott Hunter Loweconference.2 Winter Term art courses offered to Upper Schoolers this year included Cell Phone Photography and Traditional Japanese Wood Firing.3 Our students won multiple Scholastic Eastern NC regional awards this year, and one Scholastic Silver Medal, a national award, went to Jingshu Wu, 20. Camden Snyder, 20, was nominated for the prestigious American Visions Award.4Audrey Shaw Lily Driver Monty Price BaileyMrs. Michelle Osbornes 5th graders used the Imaginarium (maker space) to help create their stop motion movies. 5 In March, MAD generously provided the funding for visiting ceramicist Po Wen Liu to spend a day with Upper School Ceramics students in Mr. Kim Burroughss classes.6 During distance learning, our visual arts department continued their hands-on lessons despite the challenges. Mrs. Osborne and her 5th and 8th graders were featured in the news for their Virtual Learning Self-Portrait project.7Becca Transou Margaret Manning Sohan RamgoolamMrs. Boylstons Computer Arts students were inspired by a Zoom visit from Alexis Michelle from the Center for Visual Artists in Greensboro and her work titled, Projection, 2017. Students used free sign generators to create signs incorporating their favorite song lyrics. GDS students produced the QuARTantine art show, featuring student and faculty artwork created during the pandemic.8 The Art Department implemented the new History of Art + Design course this year in the upper school taught by Mrs. Boylston.
