b'Middle andMr. Randy Mintz, Middle and Upper School Music Teacher, announced his retirement at the end of the 2018-2019 academic year. Upper SchoolRandy was born in South Carolina and grew up in Greensboro. He earned a bachelors degree in Music Education from UNC-Greensboro in 1972 and a masters degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education from the University of Phoenix Residence Center in Music Teacher,Puerto Rico in 1981.His first 16 years in education were with the Department of Defense Education Mr. Randy MintzActivities in North Carolina and Puerto Rico. He began his teaching career in 1972 with the Camp Lejeune Dependent Schools, where he taught band at 2 separate elementary schools, one middle school, and was also the assistant director of Lejeune retires after High School. During his time there, he was the co-founder and director of the Onslow/Lejeune Community Orchestra. From 1976-1992, he worked on the Fort Buchanan Army Base in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He worked at both the Antilles Middle27 years School and High School teaching general music, chorus, band, show choir, and marching band. The Antilles High School Band appeared briefly in the Paramount movie, A Show of Force. In 1992, he found his way back to Greensboro and started working at Greensboro Day School. Over the last 27 years, he has taught band in grades 5-12. He started the GDS Jazz Band and Pep Band, which can be heard often at home basketball games. He has served as an advisor and as the Music Department Coordinator. He went on the Junior Backpacking Trip for 9 years. In 2004, Randy was honored with the Hendrix Award for Excellence in Teaching, our schools highest teaching honor. In 2013, he received the Brooks Sabbatical and studied Roots of American Music. He also won the Alumni Extra Yard Award for going above and beyond for our students. Many of Randys fondest memories have come as he has traveled with students to Carowinds, Disney World, the Florida Keys, Outer Banks, Nicaragua, Bahamas, New Orleans, and most recently, Puerto Rico. Outside of GDS, Randy stays active. He started the band program at Canterbury School and taught there at 7:30 a.m. every morning for 11 years. He has served as an Adjunct faculty member at Greensboro College as a Euphonium Teacher for the past 12 years. You could find him playing jazz locally during the last 17 years with the Kings of Swing or the Burt Massengale Band. He has played in over 200 musical theater productions in the Triad area and continues to play with approximately 12 different productions each year.Randy and his wife, Janet, have been married for 35 years. They have 3 sons, all of whom attended GDS (James 03, Joe 05, Josh 11). Their family includes 3 wonderful daughters-in-law, 3 grandsons, 1 more on the way, and a granddaughter who left this earth far too soon.Mark Hale, Head of School, stated Randy is one of those special teachers who always puts his students and school ahead of his personal life. His knowledge of music and his ability to play a remarkable number of string and horn instruments along with piano has provided our students outstanding instruction. Randy has dedicated himself to helping our students grow as musicians and has contributed exceptional leadership in the development of programs to highlight their talents. He will be greatly missed! Randy looks forward to spending more time traveling, playing music, and spending time with his grandkids. Randy was honored at many of the year end musical performances and during the Alumni Weekend at the annual Retiree Dinner.
