b'HEADS CORNERDear GDS Community,We have closed out our 49th year with style and grace as we graduated 91 seniors who are all off to outstanding colleges and universities this fall. With an average weighted GPA of 93% and a median SAT of 1300, our graduates will be scattered across 15 different states at some of the worlds most selective schools with elite scholarships in hand. This has been a very special class to me, as they entered kindergarten the first year of my headship in 2006. Over the years they have received regional and statewide recognition, and in some cases national recognition for their talents as scholars, musicians, athletes, and artists. The class of 2019 has also impressed me with their community service, conservation and tutoring efforts across Greensboro. As travelers, they have visited Europe, South Africa and Central America and brought with them contributions of supplies and good cheer. They are a class that has learned what it means to live out our mission as they have developed their intellectual, ethical and interpersonal skills. Greensboro Day School should be proud of its graduates, but they could not have been as successful without the incredible faculty who work with them each and every day. Our teachers build relationships with our students beyond their classroom walls and can be found working with students before and after school and on the weekends to help them to flourish. In recognition of their commitment, our Parents Association and our administration provide our teachers incredible opportunities to develop their professional talents. Please be sure to read the list of 2019-20 Teacher Enrichment Endowment Fund recipients and more details from our 2018-19 recipients, including an article from Ninoshka Boylston. It highlights just one of the many wonderful opportunities that our teachers have to grow and develop themselves in their fields of study. For my part, this will be my last opening letter in the GDS Magazine as Linda and I set sail on new adventures and pursuits. Its been a great run and we have loved adding one more chapter of success in the lasting history of Greensboro Day School.Warm regards,Mark C. HaleHead of SchoolGDS Magazine | 1'
