28 | Winter 2018 Imagine a new independent school opening its doors in a temporary space. In 1970, this space was Temple Emanuel. Many churches of various faiths and denominations offered to help the effort by hosting during the first year. 12 teachers and 90 students in grades 1-8 arrived at their new school on September 14, 1970. The initial Greensboro Day School Board of Trustees pulled together their personal and business assets to start the best educational program in the area. Beginning with a mix of faiths, of socio-economic backgrounds, of ethnic origins, the common focus was then and continues to be today the most powerful education available. These volunteers bought land, studied other programs, hired the best faculty they could find, and the wheels starting turning. Today’s campus at 5401 Lawndale Drive began from a purchase of 36 acres of land (currently 70 acres), the first building (now, the administration building) was completed in January 1971, and the school moved from a temporary to permanent status. During the second school year in 1971-1972, Greensboro Day School more than doubled in enrollment. Our motto of “Friendship, Scholarship, Sportsmanship” has not changed in nearly 50 years. Our mission strongly states our affirmation “to develop the intellectual, ethical, and interpersonal skills students need to be constructive contributors to the world.” GDS remains primarily interested in offering a learning experience that is designed around impressive teacher/ student relationships and supportive parents. Our 2700 alumni are truly all around the world becoming those constructive global citizens that our mission emphasizes. In the 50th year, we will celebrate many people, many accomplishments, and the various relationships that have reached fruition. Reminder from the first, opening memo to families ( our PawPrints of 1970): “Monday is the day! Greensboro Day School is a reality. All is ready for a banner first year.” – 9/8/1970.
