wild spider monkeys, enjoy fantastic food, and fresh fruit smoothies! On other days we hopped on rustic boats and explored some of the villages surrounding the lake. My favorite village was San Juan where we visited a co-op established and ran by the local women that produced hand-made textiles and clothing items. Our time in Guatemala was winding down. We travelled back to the capital to stay near the airport. This time we visited a few landmarks and explored the city by public transportation. We took a chance and joined the locals on their turf.  Although there’s beauty in every crack of this city, my eyes could not dismiss the very young and destitute trying to make it daily. My wife was generous with her money and tried to save the children and the elderly of Guatemala. The saying goes, “la educación y el respeto nunca pelea con nadie,” which means “awareness and respect never fights with anyone.”  This rang true as the people we met were always very cordial, welcoming, and helpful when interacting with us. In closing, the Brooks Sabbatical provided my family and me with an unforgettable opportunity. We were able to make memories that will live in us forever!  Most importantly, this experience will indeed help me make deep connections with all my students, especially those from Guatemala.
