The Upper School looks a little different. The once dark “locker den” has been given an update to provide more open space for students to work in small groups, places to sit and eat with friends, and quiet study space. Glass walls and enlarged windows provide more natural light as well as greater supervision of our students. Lockers have been replaced by cubbies that students can use to drop their sports equipment, books, or bagged lunches. The design process for this project took into consideration meeting student needs (including durable furniture and easy-to- clean surfaces) and creating a space that reflects the expressed wishes from students about what they would like in an updated student life center. At any time during the school day, you may regularly see students at work, a gallery wall of student artwork, or a group work session with students solving equations on a white board. In November, a ribbon cutting was held to celebrate the official naming and dedication of the Kathy Davis Student Life Center, named for Greensboro Day School’s longest tenured teacher, Kathy Davis, who retired at the end of the 2016-17 school year. Teachers, students, alumni, family, and friends gathered to celebrate. The renovated space was named for her, and as a special surprise to Mrs. Davis, a Jim Gallucci-commissioned sculpture from alumnus, current parent and friend John King ’87 was unveiled. Stop in and see the energy this refreshed area has brought to our school, and thank you to the donors who made this possible.
