The lab, which began in 2011, is an initiative to “nurture experienced writers who have diverse voices, backgrounds and life experiences,” according to a statement from Fox, “and create a strong pipeline of well-rounded talent for potential staffing on Fox television shows, films, and other Fox Entertainment projects.” MacDonald graduated from Duke University in 2012, initially planning to pursue a career in either international law or politics. But a screenwriting course she had taken during her senior year led her to change career paths. In 2013, she became a research intern on the first season of Fox’s “Sleepy Hollow,” which was filmed in the Wilmington area. She gradually rose in the ranks, and ended up writing a fourth- season episode, “Insatiable.” As part of her fellowship, MacDonald has received a script development deal with Fox Broadcasting, but said she is not sure what type of show she will ultimately write.
